ORGANIC ACIDEMIAS ONLINE SHORT COURSE

This online short course is spread out over two weeks to accommodate a full-time working schedule. It includes a mix of learning experiences - six short live sessions (with a choice of 9:00am or 5:00pm ET), brief pre-recorded video seminars to review when convenient, and homework exercises. The curriculum also includes a live patient presentation and a special session addressing the role of the non-physician in patient diagnosis/management. The duration of the course allows a comprehensive review of the topic and the opportunity to apply the learned principles to several clinical situations.

The course targets primarily (but not exclusively) advanced practice providers and clinicians who:

  • have a science background
  • have had no/limited formal training in genetic metabolic disease
  • are interested, or are involved, in the diagnosis/management of patients with inborn errors of metabolism

Nurses/nurse practitioners, physician assistants, genetic counselors, and dietitians, and their trainees, are especially welcome, but physician, research, and corporate applicants are invited to participate as well.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of each training, attendees should be able to:

  1. Detail the varied phenotypes of the organic acidemias
  2. Review the disease physiology and link it to the clinical and biochemical phenotypes.
  3. Characterize the biochemical derangements that typify the organic acidemias and how they apply to diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring.
  4. Employ current guidelines for the diagnosis and management of patients with an organic acidemia.
  5. Formulate in conjunction with other team members specific assessments and care-plans of patients with suspected or proven organic acidemias.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Each course is spaced out over two weeks with six live sessions to support working schedules and enhance recall. Once you register for either the 9am or 5pm (ET) track you will be provided login information to access a restricted webpage that will house all the documents, links, videos, and material for the course. A syllabus will be provided to all participants.

Week One

Week Two

  6. Through a combination of didactic teaching and case workshops, attendees are given the opportunity to apply the principles they have learned to (adapted) real-life cases, empowering them to better tackle such medical challenges in their clinical practice
  7. Repeated learning over time is more likely to be associated with a long-term retention of the material.
  8. All essential teaching slides are provided in a handout to attendees.
