Recorded Elective: Metabolic Causes of Encephalopathy

RECORDED ELECTIVE: METABOLIC CAUSES OF ENCEPHALOPATHY

Release date: 1/1/2022

Focus on diseases like urea cycle disorders, organic acidemias, hepatic porphyria

The videos below are an online replica of the classical training experience so common in teaching hospitals… shadowing a specialist as s/he sees her/his patients in clinic. Each Metabolism Elective has a theme and includes short medical overviews of selected diseases coupled with brief videos of patients/caregivers who describe their experiences in living with those diseases.

This activity is intended for neurologists and neurology trainees, nurses/nurse practitioners, physician assistants, genetic counselors, and dietitians, and other clinicians and their trainees, engaged in the care of patients who present with encephalopathy for reasons that are unclear. All electives will be recorded and posted following the live event on VMP's website.

FACULTY

  • Mark Korson, MD
  • Lee Stagni, patient-teacher

OBJECTIVES

At the end of each training, attendees should be able to:

  1. Identify symptoms associated with “metabolic encephalopathy”
  2. Discuss the physiology underlying the neurologic manifestations associated with the featured metabolic diseases.
  3. List the testing to be done that can raise or lower suspicions about the featured metabolic diagnoses, or to confirm the diagnosis.
  4. Employ current guidelines for the diagnosis and management of patients with metabolic causes of encephalopathy.
  5. Integrate follow-up care of the patient with a geneticist familiar with metabolic disease.

VMP's EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

  1. The topics are relevant.
  2. The presentation is pitched appropriately for the audience.
  3. The format is clinical and practical.
  4. Where possible, the patient story is included in the program (live +/- recorded presentations).
  5. Teaching is interactive and includes engaging the audience throughout with questions and case reviews.
  6. Through a combination of didactic teaching and case workshops, attendees are given the opportunity to apply the principles they have learned to (adapted) real-life cases, empowering them to better tackle such medical challenges in their clinical practice
  7. Repeated learning over time is more likely to be associated with long-term retention of the material.
  8. All essential teaching slides are provided in a handout to attendees.

This activity was created by an independent educational grant from Recordati Rare Diseases.
